I Quit My Job To Work On Fantasy Genius Full Time

A better, more customized experience for your league is here.

Hey folks,

Fantasy Genius is moving to a premium pricing model for the league sync tool starting today. League-wide subscriptions will be available from $6.99 to $14.99 per month depending on billing cadence.

For transparency, I’d like to explain why I'm making this switch. If words are no good, I also recorded a YouTube video going over the decision. Side note: making this YouTube thumbnail is a top 5 most humiliating moment of my life. But this is apparently what you have to do to get anyone to watch your video on YouTube...

While I have loved building this tool and hearing from so many of you about how it has improved your leagues, for the past three years I've worked nights and weekends and it became unsustainable to do both my full time job and this app on the side.

That left me with two main options:

  1. Shut down Fantasy Genius (sub-optimal)

  2. Quit my job, shift to a paid model, and run Fantasy Genius full time.

Perhaps insanely, I have chosen option two. That means that focusing on you, your feedback, and your league’s experience is my top priority this season. I’d like to make the case why you should stay with us as a premium league sync subscriber. Warning that some of the points below will be more serious than what you have come to expect from us.

Quality

Focusing solely on this project means more tools and features built to enhance your league’s experience. For commissioners, I am rolling out tools like finance tracking, a hub for documents/links, and customizable recaps to help you save time and keep your league engaged throughout the season. For league members, more exciting content like robust profiles for owners, a League Lore section, and schedule simulators. We'll be going in depth into these changes in future announcements, as well as some other fun ideas we have planned for the early adopters!

I promise that I will be fully dedicated to responding to your feedback, thinking of creative ways to make your league more fun, and delivering the best experience possible. Basically, this Tim Tebow speech but for hitting keys on my computer...

Pricing

Fantasy Genius is designed as a league-wide tool – one subscription gets access for all of your leaguemates. That means that at $6.99 monthly, the tool should come out to about $0.58 per member per month. As of this writing, that is 78.9% less than the cost of getting guac on your Chipotle burrito. And Fantasy Genius won't give you the squirts.

Selfish

Over the years, I have come to rely on eating food, having shelter, and occasionally enjoying an ice cold Coors Light*. In an ideal world, I’d be able to continue doing these things.

*Please sponsor us Coors Light. If you don't respond by EOD I'll have to move on to Pacifico. A crisp, refreshing Cerveza that goes down smooth.

What's Not Changing

The non-league-sync tools available on the site will remain free. Trade Rater, player rankings, blogs, etc. will still be available for free. I'll also be looking to fully bake out some of the features that I haven’t had enough time to devote to historically (e.g. being able to view team context in Trade Rater or....coming up with a better name than Trade Rater).

I sincerely appreciate how many folks have used this tool over the years. It’s surreal to even have an opportunity to quit my job and try to make this work and I can’t thank all of you enough for that – every time you’ve mentioned us on the internet or to a friend has helped us. If you don’t choose to subscribe to the premium league sync, I hope you’ll still stick around for our stupid blogs and other stuff on the site as it continues to develop. If you can't subscribe but would still like to help us out, telling a friend or someone on the world wide web would be a huge help!

Don’t hesitate to reach out to support@fantasygenius.io if you have any questions for us – either about this change or anything else.

See below for how nearly every conversation I have had IRL has gone when I tell people I am quitting my stable data analyst job to work on fantasy football:
